Vote YES on I-186
Flathead Valley Trout Unlimited along with Montana TU and other chapters around the state are asking for your urgent help to get ballot initiative I-186 on the ballot for the November election. Toxic pollution from mines – including arsenic, lead and mercury – contaminates our rivers, lakes and streams while threatening public health through our drinking water. When mining companies file for bankruptcy and leave their toxic waste behind, Montana taxpayers get stuck with clean-up costs and we all get stuck with the mess.
It’s happened all over Montana – time and time again.
Montana has 3,500 abandoned mines, more than 200 of which are known to be discharging contaminants and polluting our clean water. Our state has nearly 2,500 miles of streams polluted by acid mine drainage, lead, arsenic, and mercury from abandoned mines. That means Montanans spend millions each year cleaning up toxic pollution left behind from both historic and modern mines.
This is not an issue isolated to mines from the turn of the century. It’s happening today.
There have been five major mining company bankruptcies in Montana. Pegasus Gold II, W.R. Grace, Asarco, Canyon Resources and Atna Resources. In every case, the reclamation bonds were insufficient to cover the full cost of clean-up and long-term water treatment.
Voting YES on I-186 will ensure that new mines in Montana operate responsibly.

Montana’s Legislature has failed to act:
Clean water advocates have tried to pass modest mine reform through the Montana Legislature in recent years. Lawmakers killed those bills under the influence of mining industry. That is why we are supporting this simple solution – Ballot Initiative I-186. But there’s a catch, and it’s a big one:
WE MUST GATHER THE 25,000 SIGNATURES BY JUNE 22nd
It will be a major job to get 25,000 signatures in support of ballot initiative I-186 in just six weeks – but it’s not an impossible one. Not if every FVTU chapter member joins with all Montana TU chapter members and signs the critical initiative. But it’s critical that we gather signatures NOW.
Montana Trout Unlimited’s campaign managers have field staff in place to begin training people to gather signatures. But we really need chapter members to step up and help with this.
Here’s what you can do to add your voice to protect our waters from perpetual mine pollution once and for all.
Sign Ballot Initiative I-186: Signature gatherers will be available at our fundraiser banquet on May 19th at Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish. Please seek them out and get your name on the initiative.
Volunteer to Gather Signatures: You can sign up to help gather signatures for the initiative on the YESON186 website.
Make A Contribution To Ballot Initiative I-186 to Help Gather the 25,000 Signatures We Need By June 22nd: We are told it costs approximately $10 to get each required signature. Your contribution of $10, $20, $35, $50, $100 or more will only be used to gather the 25,000 signatures required by the State Attorney General to get the initiative on the ballot. You can make your contribution directly by visiting YESON186. This is NOT a tax-deductible donation, but solely for the purpose of getting this critical initiative on the November ballot so Montanans can VOTE YES on I-186!
Please visit YESON186 to learn more about this urgent and critical issue.
Let’s join together as FVTU members and folks all across Montana to finally put an end to the threat of toxic perpetual pollution from irresponsible mining practices and lack of regulation. VOTE YES on I-186!
That’s an issue that’s perfect for TU’s mission.I totally support it.Next, along with single barbless,we need to get in the conversation to to change the mining law.
Thanks Lucky.

Normally I wouldn’t post an anonymous comment, especially for a cuckoo right-wing radio show, but this might be worth a listen. Dave Galt, former head of the Montana Petroleum Association and Tom Richmond, former administrator for the Board of Oil and Gas Conservation. Any wonder they oppose responsible mining?
Coming up tomorrow: Tom Harris, climate skeptic funded by the Heartland Institute and Thursday, Patrick Wood, president of “Citizens for Free Speech” talking about the “Deep State’s attempt at social engineering by forcing the population to fit their prescribed agenda” and how, like “Pravda”, social media is silencing free speech. Crazy people on the radio.
