This is about a group of primitive outdoor enthusiasts trying to force their view of outdoor recreation on all Montana Outdoorsmen. The FWP calls the quiet water proposal “drastic” and “unwarranted at this time”. The FWP also says that their have been zero reports of conflict. This proposal is also about trying to fulfill the legacy of a fallen friend that despised anything other than the most primitive outdoor experience. I have fished from a jet boat in Montana for years. I spend the majority of the day rowing just like anyone drifting the river. At the end of the day I use my motor to get back to the truck. If I see someone coming my way while under power, I slow down to insure their safe enjoyment of the river. In 15 years I have never had one conflict with a non-jet boat user. Please don’t buy into the emotional mis-information being put out in the attached video. Have you ever seen a jet boat operating in such a manner here in Montana? Have you ever had seen or heard of an Airboat on a MT River? The videos are extreme examples and were not filmed anywhere in Big Sky country. Let’s look at this issue with sensitivity and respect for the recreational needs of all Montanans. Taking the rights of another Hunter or Angler is a dangerous precedence to set. Whos rights will be impacted next? Spey rod anglers because they can cast to far or compound bow hunters because they can be accurate at longer ranges? Thanks for hearing my side of the issue. The moniker Back Country Hunters and Anglers is a joke for these people. They are the master of bait and switch and if they told me what time it was I would look at my watch. These are left wing extremists with well funded out of state finances. These people are stage one of a terminal disease and need to be monitored by local sportsman that want to enjoy our state as we know it.
The problem remains that everyone is not courteous when using a motorized boat. That is why sometimes rules are necessary so everyone can enjoy the rivers. Jet skis were banned because they ruined the area for everyone. I support the 10 horsepower limit on the Missouri above Prewett Creek, because the jet boats are relatively new and they are trying to change a long standing excellent fishery. Motorized boats are allowed in most places, we are just talking about areas where motorized boats could not previously use because the water was too shallow or rocky. The good fly fishing is helping the economy of several small towns on the upper Missouri and this is sustainable if we take care of the river. These places are seeing a good economic boost from fly fishing now, let’s not ruin it.
Hi Mary, I am a Helena based fly fisherman and I use the Missouri extensively (about 30 times per year). I own a drift boat, waders, and a jet boat to access the various waters I fish in Montana. Over the past 8 years as I’ve rowed my driftboat from Holter Dam to Prewett Creek (and further) I’ve seen exactly two jet boats on that stretch of river. In both cases, the jet boaters were courteous and taking care not to be bothersome or create a hazard. There is no problem with jet boats on this stretch of river (or, for that matter, the 60 mile stretch of the Yellowstone where BHA also wants to implement restrictions). The proposal is a masterpiece of innuendo and is filled with emotional terms like “safety”, “protecting the resource”, and “traditional use”. Of course no data is anywhere to be found regarding safety issues or danger to the resource, and traditional use could mean very different things to different people. This is simply a single group of river users who want to dictate terms to everyone else on how and when they can use the rivers of Montana. Your comment about jet boats being relatively new is simply not accurate. I’ve been floating and jet boating for over 25 years and jet boats certainly weren’t new when I purchased my first one in 1990. Another statement you’ve made that has to be challenged: “(jet boats) are trying to change a long standing excellent fishery”. Again, not true, and based totally on emotion versus facts. I hope FWP commissioners follow the advice of their own subject matter experts at FWP and deny this selfish, flawed proposal.
