Volunteer Opportunity

Flathead Valley Trout Unlimited will be helping out once again this year with the native fish restoration effort on upper Sheppard Creek in the Tally Lake Ranger District. The USFS installed a barrier culvert on the upper reaches of Sheppard Creek to stop the invasion of non-native brook trout into one of the few existing native cutthroat habitats left in the area. The Forest Service is using a multi-year suppression effort to remove brook trout to give the native fish a chance to re-colonize that stream reach.

Beth Gardner with the USFS is looking for volunteers for Sept. 19-22 to do some electrofishing to suppress non-native brook trout in upper Sheppard Creek. TU volunteers will be paired with experienced Forest Service technicians. There will be several small teams working along the creek each day. This is a fun opportunity to get out on the ground and see the nuts and bolts of native fish restoration.
