We’re Back!

FVTU monthly meetings are back and with Halloween just around the corner, what better way to start than with a discussion about Creepy Crawlers!

We kicked off our 2024-2025 season of General Membership Meetings with an excellent presentation by Dr. Rachel Malison from the University of Montana’s Flathead Lake Bio Station. Her topic, Bugs in the Basement: The Hidden Stoneflies of the Flathead River, was a fascinating look at the wide variety of stoneflies living in the Flathead River drainage. These little critters are an important part of the ecosystem as well as being on the trout’s menu; thus of importance to any angler fishing the forks of the Flathead.

Dr. Malison talks stoneflies

The title of her talk comes from a bizarre incident this past spring when FVTU board member Lee Jester went down into his basement and found it full of stoneflies! Lee lives near the banks of the Middle Fork of the Flathead and how those stoneflies got from their home to his made for quite an interesting story.

Dr. Malison’s fast paced presentation held the group’s interest and generated a number of good questions afterwards.

As always, there was a brief discussion of issues FVTU is currently working on, upcoming events and a drawing for door prizes. Regular meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month at Sacred Waters Brewing Co. where you can come early and grab a bite to eat before the show starts at 6:00 pm.

Next month our program will be on spey fishing for trout, a topic that has been growing in interest lately. December is reserved for our annual Christmas party at Bias Brewing, a really fun time for the whole family with fishing related games and our always popular bucket raffle. Watch your mailbox or email inbox for notifications on these and other upcoming events planned by FVTU.
