FVTU Coronavirus Statement

AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

The Flathead Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited is committed to our goals, causes and members. The impact of COVID -19 on our many members, sponsors, contributors and friends in the Flathead Valley, and beyond, has affected us in incalculable ways. The downstream effects are hard to predict and maybe difficult to overcome.

In the face of the current crisis, we have decided to cancel our annual banquet scheduled for May 16, 2020. This was a difficult but prudent decision. It will give our chapter time to focus our resources more keenly on our causes and community.

First, and foremost, we are dedicated to conserving, protecting and restoring the coldwater fisheries and their habitat in northwestern Montana.

Second, we remain focused on the protection of our Westslope Cutthroat and Bull Trout populations and the unique requirements of their habitat. We will continue to champion the removal of the threats to their survival. We will spotlight the most serious dangers that they face, including:

•      Illegal introduction of non-native fish to their habitat.

•      The threat of train derailments and the lack of adequate response preparedness along rail corridors.

Additionally, we pledge our continued support for sensible fishing regulations that maintain the long-term health of our native trout populations. We remain committed to working with state and federal fish and wildlife agencies to identify and implement additional protections as necessary.

Third, this pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented strain on our healthcare systems, emergency responders, law enforcement agencies and their associated parts. They are the real heroes in this battle against COVID -19. We encourage all of you to support them directly through a financial contribution if you are able, and indirectly by following state guidelines, such as social distancing. Consider making a donation in the amount that you would have spent at our banquet to one of the many charitable organizations that support the hospitals, first responders and law enforcement agencies that serve and protect our valley. The success of these organizations is vital.

Fourth, we recognize the significant negative impact that the pandemic has had on the many businesses and organizations that support FVTU, especially fly shops, sporting goods stores and guides and outfitters. We urge all of our FVTU members to “Shop Local” and to support those who have generously support us over the years.

We look forward to seeing you this fall when we restart our regularly scheduled meetings with an informative slate of programs and at our annual Christmas party in December. In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy, practice social distancing, and remain hopeful. Together, we will get through this…

THANK YOU
