FVTU Veterans Ice Fishing Day

On Tuesday, February 11, FVTU board members Jim Borowski and Rob Weiker took three veterans from the Kalispell Vet Center on an ice fishing trip to Loon Lake. The trip was one of our Veterans Service Partnership (VSP) programs. We were joined by Adam Jones, the Outreach Specialist for the Vet Center and Dax Kara, an experienced ice fisherman.

Rob generously donated all of the ice fishing equipment and electronics. FVTU provided lunches and the vet Center brought plenty of hot coffee. The day was overcast and cold, but not frigid and a couple of portable ice shelters along with a propane heater insured that everyone stayed comfortable.

As you can see, one veteran needed a wheelchair. It took a bit of doing (and some muscle) to get him out to our fishing hole but it was well worth it. He not only caught the first fish, but he caught the most fish! In fact all of the vets caught fish; a combination of rainbow trout and largemouth bass.

Nice rainbow and first fish of the day!

“Here’s your bass!”
Yes, that’s an FWP officer. While patrolling Loon Lake he stopped by to check out FVTU’s VSP program in action just in time to see the biggest fish of the day caught.

A couple of the largemouths were kept for the frying pan but all of the rainbows were released back into the lake to provide action for some other lucky anglers.

Catch…
and release!

There’s a misconception out there that all TU members are fly fisherman. While indeed, many of us (especially around here) do indeed love to cast a fly in one of our numerous trout streams, we enjoy and encourage all legal forms of sport fishing. Our focus is not on the fishing but on the fish and the cold, clean, pure waters that they need to thrive. As our population grows, open spaces are built up, and more pressure is placed on our resources, the need to protect our precious waterways becomes ever more important.

Science shows us that time spent in the outdoors and participating in activities such as fishing has a genuine therapeutic benefit, especially in reducing stress. TU’s Veterans Service Partnership is a way for veterans, active duty military members, and their families to enjoy the benefits of fishing while engaging with their local TU chapter and our community. It’s also a way for TU volunteers to show their appreciation to those who served.

If you’re interested in becoming active in FVTU and helping our local veterans through programs like this ice fishing day; or if you’re a vet and interested in learning more about TU or local fishing opportunities here in the Flathead; come join us at one of our monthly meetings or drop me an email.
