Finding Peace Through Fly Fishing

FVTU holds third annual veterans float down the Flathead

On Thursday, September 12, FVTU took six local veterans on a float down the main stem of the Flathead River to introduce them to the joys and therapeutic value of fly fishing.  This was our third consecutive year treating a group of vets to a day on the river as part of TU’s Veterans Service Partnership (VSP) initiative. The VSP serves all veterans and their families and works to better our veterans lives through the healing power of time spent on a trout stream. This year’s veterans came to us through the Kalispell Vet Center and were accompanied by one of the staff therapists as well as a reporter from the Daily Inter Lake. FVTU volunteers & their rigs

It was a beautiful day to be on the river; calm, mostly sunny, and 72°.  The cooler conditions of early fall made for better fishing as well.  Not everyone landed a fish but everyone had a great time and really enjoyed the day.  A collection of drift boats and rafts, manned by FVTU board members and volunteers carried the vets from Pressentine Bar down to Old Steel Bridge.  At lunch we talked about TU in general and specifically what the Flathead Valley chapter is doing to help preserve our precious fishery and save the native westslope cutthroat and bull trout.  Each participating vet will receive a complimentary one year membership to Trout Unlimited and we encouraged them to become an active part of the FVTU family.

A tip of the FVTU hat to our volunteer/companion guides and rowers: Dan Olson, Dan Short, Lucky Sultz, Glen Anacker, Jered Milligan, Bob Holley, and Ryan Richardson.  Special thanks to the Which Haus in Whitefish who gave us a discount on our lunches and to Justin Lawrence of Lakestream Fly Shop, also in Whitefish, who provided new leaders for all of our fishermen.  Thank you for your support!
