2019 Tie-A-Thon a Success
The 2019 Tie-A-Thon in support of the Warriors & Quiet Waters Foundation was another success. As in 2018, TU chapters around the state were asked to donate flies to the Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation (WQW) in Bozeman.
Since 2007, WQW had been bringing injured post 9/11 combat veterans to Montana for a week of recreational therapy on some of the best trout waters in the world. Over 700 veterans, their spouses, and caregivers have participated in these programs. WQW outfits each participating veteran with a full fly fishing outfit: rod, reel, line, waders, boots, rain gear, hats, gear bags, etc.; over $1000 in gear that is theirs to keep. The WQW philosophy is to teach the veterans to fly fish, not take them fishing. WQW wants to empower their participants with a tool that they can use when they get home so that they can continue the healing experience they received in Montana. Flies donated through the Tie-A-Thon will be used by the vets when they’re here as well as be gifted to them as part of their fishing gear.
FVTU collected 2,852 flies to donate to Warriors & Quiet Waters. A hearty Thank You to everyone who donated flies this year. Fly shops, guides, FVTU members and non-members alike all chipped in to contribute to the cause. Although we didn’t win the prize for donating the most flies per chapter member, we did have a big impact and the real winners are the veterans who will be using those flies this summer.
