“This is a victory”

In 2013, anglers will once again be able to target kokanee salmon in Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho. Fishing for kokanee was closed in 2000 due to drastically reduced populations from the effects of reservoir regulation and a booming population of predatory lake trout. In 2006, Idaho Fish and Game instituted a lake trout suppression program aimed at stopping the decline in the kokanee, native bull trout and westslope cutthroat populations. The program employed gillnets, trap nets and angler incentives to reduce lake trout numbers.

Last week, Chip Corsi, supervisor for the IDFG’s Panhandle Region reported to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council meeting in Coeur d’Alene on the success of the program so far. Following the August netting effort, managers have successfully removed over 80% of the invasive lake trout population. Adult kokanee salmon populations are at their highest point since fishing was closed in 2000 and bull trout populations have not been affected. Kokanee numbers overall are expected to be at their highest since 1996 in 2013 following their lowest point ever in 2007.

“We generally view lake trout as bad neighbors,” Corsi said of a fish species that was introduced to the lake.

Bull trout numbers have proven to be unaffected by netting bycatch due to the lake trout suppression effort with numbers even increasing slightly since netting began in 2006. Rainbow trout, including the trophy Gerrard strain in the lake have also proven to not be much affected by the netting effort. IDFG is proposing to remove the bounty on rainbows and hopes that in the near future, they will see increases in trophy fishing for both rainbows and native bull trout which coexisted peacefully in Pend Oreille prior to the invasion by lake trout.

With the lake trout population greatly reduced and the kokanee population increasing, the IDFG feels that the kokanee and rainbows can now coexist as they did in the days before the lake trout blossomed.

These results could also prove to be beneficial to other proposed lake trout suppression efforts such as in nearby Priest Lake and also for the proposed lake trout suppression project in Flathead Lake in Montana.

“This is a victory”, said Andy Dux, principal fishery research biologist on the project, “considering that lake trout posed a major threat to bull trout.”
