Barbless Hook Petition
The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission has proposed mandating the use of barbless hooks on some waters in Montana where our native fish populations are facing reduced numbers due to fishing pressure. The proposed areas are all currently catch and release for cutthroat trout.
The Flathead Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited supports this proposal. Barbless hooks have been shown to reduce fishing mortality through easier hook removal, less time out of the water and reduced hook damage. Many of our neighboring states and Canadian provinces have instituted barbless hook rules to protect their valuable native fish.
Please sign our petition to send a note to the MFWP Commission to show your support for the use of barbless hooks and for protecting our native fish populations.
Unfortunately, MFWP officials have indicated that any substantial increase in the fishing mortality on westslope cutthroat trout could lead to regulation changes that might limit angler days and rafting on the river and/or catch limits for cutthroats. We need to do what we can to reduce fishing mortality while we still have time.
The commissioners need to know that Montana anglers support this and other measures that will help to ensure that our native fish will remain an important part of the Montana angling experience.
