Swan Lake Netting: Volunteers Needed!

2013 Swan LakeThe Swan Valley has historically been home to a stable bull trout population. However, in 1998 anglers began to occasionally catch adult sized lake trout from Swan Lake and the Swan River. This caused alarm because lake trout are not native and are notorious for rapidly expanding and dominating fish communities in lakes with Mysis shrimp, particularly at the expense of bull trout and kokanee salmon. In 2003, the level of concern was compounded when biologists gillnetted juvenile lake trout from Swan Lake during standard low-intensity sampling efforts, indicating that wild reproduction was occurring.

Beginning in 2009, MFWP, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service began a program of removing lake trout from Swan Lake using gillnets to improve survival of native bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout. The program was extended by five years in 2012. Each summer and fall, contracted netting boats remove lake trout. Flathead Valley Trout Unlimited along with Montana Trout Unlimited has provided volunteers for the effort each year.

This year, juvenile lake trout netting will run from August 10th through August 29th. FVTU is calling for volunteers to help out on the boats. This is a great opportunity to get out on Swan Lake with the professionals and learn more about this important native fish conservation effort.  TU volunteers will clean fish and prepare them for donation to local food banks. Volunteers need no experience and should wear slime gear and some low boots to stay dry.  We can provide rain-gear that’s already mucked up for those who want to save their own and are brave enough to wear ours.  No knives or other gear are needed and volunteers can typically snag a few fish for personal use, so bring a cooler if you so desire.  We will go from one of two sites on the north (next to Terrace Supper Club) and south (Forest Service Campground boat launch) end of the lake, respectively.
